How to use HID 4500 Fingerprint Reader?
To utilize an HID DigitalPersona 4500 Fingerprint Reader, connect the USB to your computer, download the suitable driver (or a driver compatible with Windows Hello) from HID Global Drivers, and register your fingerprints via your operating system or designated time-tracking/security software.
Effectively using the reader entails three primary steps: setup, enrollment, and scanning.
1. Installation & Setup
-
- Connect: Connect the USB cable of the HID 4500 to an available USB port on your computer. A bright cool-blue LED will illuminate, indicating that it is receiving power and establishing communication.
- Drivers: Windows frequently attempts to install drivers automatically. In cases where this process fails, or if you need enterprise or legacy applications, you should download the official drivers or the Windows Biometric Framework (WBF) package directly from HID Global Drivers.
2. Enrollment (Adding a Fingerprint)
-
- For Windows Hello (Desktop Security): Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in Options > Windows Hello Fingerprint. Click “Set up” and follow the on-screen instructions to register your finger.
- For Third-Party Software (POS/Time Clock): If you are using the scanner for attendance (e.g., TimeDrop) or custom software, open the application’s admin panel, navigate to Employee/User Management > Fingerprint Enrollment, and follow their specific prompt.
- Enrollment Tip: When registering, place your finger flat and centered on the silicone surface. You might be asked to lift and press several times to capture the edges and tips of your fingerprint.
3. Everyday Scanning
- Gently position your registered finger on the scanner window.
- A red flash or flicker will indicate that the reader has successfully captured your fingerprint image.
- Raise your finger as soon as the red flash appears and allow the application or desktop to confirm and log you in.
