What are Bluetooth Low Energy beacons?
Bluetooth HID refers to Bluetooth Human Interface Device. It comprises a collection of protocols that enable user-input devices such as mice, keyboards, and game controllers to communicate wirelessly with computers, smartphones, and tablets. It functions similarly to a USB cable, but utilizes radio waves for connectivity.
Common Examples
- Wireless computer mice and trackpads
- QWERTY and numeric computer keyboards
- Video game controllers and joysticks
- Virtual reality hand controllers
- Media remote controls
How It Works
- The Device: The tool you touch (like a mouse) sends data reports about clicks or moves.
- The Host: The main screen or computer receives that data and moves the cursor or types a letter.
- The Standard: It is based on standard USB device rules, making it easy for operating systems to understand the inputs without special drivers.
Common Uses
- Indoor Navigation: Assisting individuals in navigating large structures such as airports, museums, or shopping centers where GPS functionality is limited
- Retail Marketing: Delivering personalized product offers or introductory messages to a customer’s mobile application when they are in proximity to a designated display
- Asset Tracking: Identifying costly tools, medical apparatus, or shipping containers within warehouses and manufacturing facilities
