What is an RFID access control system?

What is an RFID access control system

An RFID access control system is a keyless entry solution that employs radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to either permit or restrict access to secure locations. Users possess an RFID-enabled card, key fob, or tag that wirelessly interacts with a reader at an entry point, thereby unlocking the door for those who are authorized.

How it works

  • RFID tags: An authorized person possesses an RFID tag or card that contains a unique identifier.
  • RFID readers: A reader positioned at the entrance emits a radio signal.
  • Wireless communication: When the tag comes within range of the reader, it is powered by the reader’s radio waves and sends its unique information back.
  • System check: The reader transmits this information to a central server that checks if the tag’s ID is authorized for that specific location.
  • Access granted/denied: If the ID is authorized, the system sends a signal to unlock the door. If not, the door remains locked.

Benefits

  • Convenience: An RFID access control system, eliminates the need for physical keys, which can be lost or copied.
  • Enhanced security: Provides a higher level of security compared to traditional locks, as access is controlled electronically and can be tracked.
  • Activity tracking: Systems can log who accessed a specific area and when.
  • Easy management: Administrators can grant or revoke access quickly and remotely by updating the central database.
